Swedish police get 24/7 BVLOS. Now their records are the runway.

Sweden's Transport Agency has approved round-the-clock BVLOS drone operations for the Swedish police over parts of Norrköping — the first approval of its kind in Sweden, built on a danger area combined with a geographical UAS zone, with air-traffic coordination and risk-based conditions attached. The police plan to extend the capability to Stockholm, Södertälje and Gothenburg. “Through this decision, we have the opportunity to use our UAS around the clock,” said Peter Holmstedt of police region East.

The part regulators said out loud

Transportstyrelsen was explicit that it will assess outcomes and explore further BVLOS possibilities in the autumn. That sentence deserves more attention than the approval itself: the expansion to three more cities will be decided by what the Norrköping operation's record shows. Every flight, every incident, every maintenance decision over the coming months is evidence in that assessment — and police operations carry the heaviest accountability of anyone in the sky, because their flights can be examined by courts and complaint processes as well as regulators.

The airspace structure is telling too: a segregated D-area as the stepping stone — exactly the transitional architecture the UK CAA's new ConOps describes growing out of, towards integrated, risk-based airspace. Sweden is running the first chapter of the same book.

For any force or operator watching this: 24/7 BVLOS means the aircraft and its dock must be genuinely ready when nobody is looking, and the proof must accumulate itself — readiness monitored continuously, incidents detected and documented end-to-end, records producible on demand. The approval is the start line. The record is what gets you the next city.
